Heath Fox
Assistant Dean, Arts and Humanities
In February 2006 Heath Fox was appointed Assistant Dean of Arts and Humanities
at UCSD, where he serves as the senior administrative officer for a Division of six academic departments; History, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Theatre and Dance, and Visual Arts, and for the University Art Gallery and the Center for the Humanities. His responsibilities include staff leadership, financial management, human resources and academic personnel management, strategic planning, communications and development, and general administration.
Prior to this appointment, he served the San Diego Museum of Art as its first Director of Administration (2001-2006). His responsibilities included staff leadership, strategic planning, financial management, human resources management, legal affairs, facilities management, security and risk management, and general administration. From October 2003 until September 2004 he served as Acting Executive Director.
Previously, he was Associate Director of Administration at the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego (1997-2001). In addition to management and administration of museum operations, he was responsible for overseeing a major capital expansion and renovation project. This project included a fourfold increase in the size of the museum facility and corresponding expansion of museum programming, staff structure, and associated logistics requirements. He completed a first career as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps (1976-1996), retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
He holds an MA in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester and a BS in Business Finance from Virginia Tech, studied European art history at Sotheby’s Institute of Art ( London), and is a graduate of the Getty Leadership Institute’s museum management program and the Harvard Business School executive education program. He serves on the Board of Directors of Balboa Park’s National Historic Landmark House of Hospitality, and on the Carlsbad Arts Commission.
