University of California, San Diego
In 2006 Heath Fox was appointed Assistant Dean of Arts and Humanities at UCSD, where he serves as the senior administrative officer for a Division of six academic departments: History, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Theatre and Dance, and Visual Arts. His duties encompass strategic planning, policy formulation, and resource administration.
Prior to this appointment, he served the San Diego Museum of Art as Director of Administration (2001-2006) where he participated in all aspects of strategic and operational management, encompassing administrative, curatorial, programmatic, and external relations functions. From October 2003 until September 2004 he served as Acting Executive Director.
Previously, he was Associate Director of Administration at the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego (1997-2001). In addition to management responsibilities, he oversaw a capital expansion that included a fourfold increase in the size of the facility and corresponding expansion of artistic programming, staff structure, and logistics requirements. He completed a first career as an officer in the United States Marine Corps (1976-1996), retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
He holds an MA in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester and a BS in Business Finance from Virginia Tech, studied European art history at Sotheby’s Institute of Art (London), completed the Harvard Graduate School of Education management development program, the Harvard Business School executive education program, and the Getty Leadership Institute museum management program.
He is the current Chair of the Carlsbad Arts Commission, providing policy advice on arts education programs, the Art in Public Places program, municipal grants to arts organizations and school programs, the Cannon Art Gallery, the Jazz in the Park summer concert series, and the Carlsbad Music Festival. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Balboa Art Conservation Center, a regional center that preserves and restores works of art, cultural objects, and historic material, and consults for conservation programs at collections-based institutions. He is past President of the Board of Directors of Balboa Park Central, a nonprofit organization serving Park visitors and institutions.
