FAREWELL
FROM DEAN BERNSTEIN
San Diego has been my home for nearly 20 years. It is thus quite poignant for me to anticipate exciting new duties and challenges as the senior vice-president and provost of Tulane University. My great sadness at leaving UCSD is tempered by enormous admiration and pride as I reflect upon what has been accomplished in the Division of Arts and Humanities. A truly robust momentum characterizes all our departments and programs; I earnestly believe we can look forward to greater and greater triumphs and achievements in the months and years ahead.
We are most fortunate that, pending formal approval by the university regents, the extremely competent and talented Eric Van Young, professor of History, has agreed to serve as interim dean of Arts and Humanities. He comes on board this July to collaborate with our tremendously skilled and wonderfully dedicated divisional staff. A nationwide search for the next permanent dean will be conducted during the 2007-08 academic year. It has been my great privilege to serve the division as its chief academic officer. To you all, I send my very best wishes and a warm farewell. So long!
